Court Denies Early Termination of Lakeland Bank Redlining Consent Order

Court Denies Early Termination of Lakeland Bank Redlining Consent Order

A federal judge has turned down a request to prematurely end a consent order tied to Lakeland Bank's redlining case. The decision keeps the original agreement in place, meaning the bank must continue following the terms set under the prior administration.

Last year, the Trump Administration asked the federal district court in New Jersey to dissolve the order before its scheduled end date. The motion argued that the bank had already addressed the issues and that continuing oversight was unnecessary. Lakeland Bank had entered the consent order after federal regulators accused it of avoiding lending in majority-minority neighborhoods in the Newark area.

The court disagreed with the early termination request. In its ruling, the judge noted that the bank had not yet completed all required steps under the agreement, including certain community lending goals and outreach programs. The court also pointed out that the original order was designed to run for a specific period, and that ending it early would undermine the purpose of the settlement.

Lakeland Bank said it respects the ruling and will continue to comply with the order. The bank has previously stated it has made significant progress in expanding its lending practices. However, the court's decision means the monitoring and reporting requirements will stay active for the full duration originally agreed upon.

The case remains a notable example of how courts handle efforts to modify or end regulatory settlements. For now, the bank must keep working under the existing terms.
