Finance critic Peter Milobar leaving B.C. Conservative caucus to sit as Independent MLA

Peter Milobar, the MLA for Kamloops-North Thompson, has officially left the B.C. Conservative caucus. He will now sit as an Independent member of the legislature. Milobar says the decision comes down to a fundamental mismatch between his own values and the direction set by the party's new leader, Kerry-Lynne Findlay.

In a statement, Milobar explained that his approach to politics and public service no longer lines up with the leadership style and priorities coming from the top. He did not hold back, noting that the recent shift in the party's tone and strategy made it impossible for him to stay. He said he still wants to work hard for his constituents, but he can no longer do that under the current Conservative banner.

Findlay took over the party recently, and her leadership has brought a noticeable change in how the caucus operates. Milobar, who has a long history in municipal and provincial politics, said he respects the party but cannot compromise his own principles. He added that his focus remains on local issues like health care, housing, and resource development in his riding.

The move leaves the B.C. Conservatives with a smaller caucus in the legislature. Milobar's departure is not entirely a surprise to political watchers, as he had been seen as a more moderate voice within the group. For now, he says he will evaluate his options going forward, but his immediate priority is serving the people who elected him. He also made it clear that he has no plans to join another party at this time.
