Samsung Forecast a 19-Fold Profit Jump Today: So Why is Stock Down 6%?

Samsung Electronics announced on Tuesday that it expects a staggering 19-fold increase in quarterly operating profit, driven by a strong recovery in memory chip prices and robust demand for artificial intelligence hardware. The South Korean tech giant projected an operating profit of roughly 10.4 trillion won for the fourth quarter, a massive leap from the 2.8 trillion won reported a year earlier. Revenue is also expected to climb by about 12 percent.

Despite the blockbuster forecast, Samsung's stock dropped more than 6 percent in early trading. Analysts pointed to profit-taking as the main culprit. The company's shares had already surged fivefold from their 2022 lows, leaving little room for further upside in the near term. Some investors also expressed caution over the pace of recovery in the broader semiconductor market, noting that consumer electronics demand remains sluggish.

The profit jump underscores Samsung's dominant position in the high-bandwidth memory market, a critical component for AI chips. However, the stock's decline suggests that the good news was already priced in. With the chip cycle showing signs of peaking, traders are now looking ahead to whether Samsung can sustain this momentum through 2025.
