South Korea has set up a new financing council to back a massive $150 billion investment push into the U.S. shipbuilding industry. The move, announced by the country's financial regulators, aims to support Korean shipbuilders and related firms as they expand their footprint in the American market. The council will coordinate funding from state-run banks and private financial institutions, offering loans, guarantees, and other instruments to help companies secure orders and build facilities in the United States.
A key feature of the plan is a shared risk model. The Korean government will take on early-stage risks alongside private industry, covering initial costs like feasibility studies and project development. This is intended to lower the barrier for Korean firms, especially smaller suppliers and engineering companies, to enter the U.S. market. Officials say the approach mirrors successful strategies used in other export-driven sectors.
The investment push comes as the U.S. seeks to revive its domestic shipbuilding capacity, partly in response to growing competition from China. Korean shipbuilders, already global leaders in high-value vessels like LNG carriers and container ships, are well positioned to contribute technology and expertise. The financing council will operate under the country's Export-Import Bank and the Korea Trade Insurance Corporation, with regular reviews to adjust support as needed.
