A new state audit has flagged more than a dozen expenses by Cary's former town manager and other employees as "questionable," raising concerns about the town's financial oversight. State Auditor Dave Boliek released the report, which details a range of spending issues including high-cost dinners, unauthorized land purchases, and the payment of graduate-school tuition for a town councilwoman.
The audit points to a pattern of weak internal controls that allowed these expenses to go unchecked. Among the most notable findings are charges for expensive meals that lacked proper documentation or approval, as well as a land acquisition that was made without the necessary authorization from the town council. The tuition payment for the councilwoman also drew scrutiny, with auditors questioning whether it served a legitimate public purpose.
Boliek emphasized that the report is not a criminal investigation but rather a call for better accountability. "These expenses should not have happened under normal circumstances," he said in a statement. The audit recommends that Cary strengthen its financial policies and ensure that all future expenditures are properly reviewed and approved.
Town officials have acknowledged the findings and say they are already implementing changes to prevent similar issues. Cary's current leadership has pledged to tighten oversight and review all expense reporting procedures. The audit serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency in local government spending, especially as the town continues to grow.
