'1873': How the first financial crisis made the world turn on the Rothschilds

The financial panic of 1873 is often remembered as the start of the "Long Depression," a global economic slump that lasted for years. But for one family, the crisis marked a turning point in public perception that had little to do with balance sheets. The Rothschilds, the legendary banking dynasty, had weathered financial storms before. This time, however, the economic misery did not just threaten their wealth. It gave new life to a dangerous lie.

When the Vienna stock market crashed in May 1873, followed by the collapse of Jay Cooke and Company in the United States in September, banks failed and unemployment soared across Europe and America. The Rothschilds, with their vast network of bonds and railways, took heavy losses. But unlike many competitors, they survived. Their ability to endure the crash, however, was twisted into a weapon against them.

Antisemitic pamphlets and newspapers quickly spread the idea that the Rothschilds had not just survived the crash but had caused it. The theory was simple and poisonous: a small group of Jewish bankers had engineered the panic to buy up assets cheaply and control the world. The Rothschilds became a living symbol of a shadowy financial cabal. This narrative was not entirely new, but the depression gave it a desperate audience. Farmers who lost their land and workers who lost their jobs found a convenient scapegoat in the image of a secretive Jewish financier.

By the late 1870s, the Rothschild name was no longer just a sign of wealth. It was a code word for a conspiracy. The myths born in the 1873 crash did not fade with the economic recovery. They hardened into the antisemitic tropes that would later fuel the Protocols of the Elders of Zion and provide dark material for generations of hate. The panic of 1873 did not destroy the Rothschilds financially, but it helped create a monster that outlived them.
