A popular fast-food spot in Harvard Square is closing its doors for good. The Clover location, known for its vegetarian fare and quick service, will permanently shut down later this month. The decision comes after months of financial strain that the owners say made it impossible to keep the restaurant running.
The Harvard Square branch, which had been a staple for students and locals alike, struggled with rising rent costs and a drop in foot traffic. While Clover has other locations in the Boston area, this particular spot faced unique challenges. The restaurant's management cited a combination of factors, including higher food prices and a shift in customer habits after the pandemic.
Employees at the location were informed of the closure earlier this week. Some will have the chance to transfer to other Clover restaurants, but not all positions will be saved. The company expressed gratitude to its staff and loyal customers, noting that the decision was not made lightly.
For many in the community, the closure marks the end of an era. Clover had been a go-to spot for quick, plant-based meals in a neighborhood known for its historic eateries and busy student population. The restaurant's last day of operation is expected to be later this month, leaving a vacant storefront in one of Cambridge's busiest commercial districts.
