Convertus Group has reached a major milestone with the closing of $135 million in project financing for its flagship biofuel facility in York Region, Ontario. The funding package, led by Power Sustainable Infrastructure Credit, will support the construction and operation of the large-scale organic waste processing plant.
The facility is designed to convert municipal food waste and other organic materials into renewable natural gas and a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Once fully operational, it is expected to process a significant portion of the region's organic waste, diverting material from landfills and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The project aligns with broader provincial and federal goals around clean energy and circular economy practices.
This financing close represents a key step forward for the company, which has been developing the site for several years. The facility is slated to be one of the largest of its kind in Canada, with the capacity to generate enough renewable energy to power thousands of homes annually. Construction is expected to ramp up in the coming months, with commercial operations targeted for the near term.
Company leadership expressed confidence in the project's long-term viability, citing strong municipal partnerships and a growing demand for low-carbon fuel alternatives. The York Region facility is seen as a model that could be replicated in other Canadian municipalities looking to modernize their waste management systems.
